What makes you stand out?

At the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) we have a "Quarter Mile." The quarter mile is a pathway leading from dorm side to academic side that thousands of students walk every day, during the school year.

I arrived at RIT in September to start my Freshman year of college. After walking the quarter mile "everyday" for a few months, I started to recognize and notice a few people that stand out from the rest of the crowd. Each individual has their own style or characteristic that will catch your eye.

These people not only stand out to me, they are known around campus. I've asked a few people "Have you seen the girl with the.....?" or "Have you seen the guy with the cool.....?" Many people I've talked to about these "stand out people" will say " I know them! Well, I don't know them, but I know of them."

I found this interesting that one person could be known by only their appearance and I want to give these Quarter Mile Celebrities a chance to tell their story on my blog.

Victor Santiago

First Impression: Every time I see Victor on the Quarter Mile he is always smiling. The first time I saw him, I noticed his big smile, and  it made me smile. He is one of those people that you see around and just want to get to know. Victor is very friendly and super active around campus. He makes a great Quarter Mile Celebrity!

What is your major? What year are you?
Fourth year, graphic design major. I am minoring in ASL deaf studies and communications.

Where are you from?
Rochester, New York, so I'm local.

What are you planning on doing after college?
Well, being here I got to do a lot of extra-curricular activities, so it's helped me figure out what I want to do.  I want to apply for student affairs graduate school. I would like to work at any campus that will take me. If I could work at RIT in some student aspect that would be great!

How do you think your style reflects you as a person?
I'm one of those people who doesn't really care so much what people say. I usually wear letters of Pi Kappa Phi, the fraternity I am member of.  I'm approachable.  I'm very mellow, I'm not much a brands kind of guy.

How do you see yourself?
I just feel like I'm a regular student, a lot my friends are like, "Everybody knows you". It takes me like 1/2 hour to walk down the quarter mile because I'm always stopping to say hi or talk to someone. It's gotten to the point where some people know me and I have no idea who they are.

How would your best friend describe you?
He'll say sometimes I have no filter. He'll say I'm always giving a help hand and that I can never say no. He would say I'm funny, kind, and that sometimes I can be annoying, after hanging out for hours after hours. We know way to much about each other. Sometimes people call us a married couple because we are always arguing.

Is there anything you want people to know about you when they read my blog?
If you know me and I don't know you, introduce yourself to me.  If you want to say hi or need information on anything around campus feel free to ask me.  I don't bite!

Sara Toffolo

First Impression: When I first saw Sara on the Quarter Mile I thought her style was very bold and extremely unique.  She has a confident walk and emits an energy that makes you wonder, who is this girl? Her style is out of the box and her blue hair embellishes her look.  She was very interesting to talk to and had a great personality.

What is your major? What year are you?
First year doing graphic design and minoring in German.

Where are you from?
Syracuse, NY

What are you planning on doing after college?
Going to Germany and doing graphic design work for an advertisement firm.

How do you think your style reflects you as a person?
I think a lot of the things I wear makes me more confident.  I like to think outside of the box and be creative. What I wear entertains me.  It's about adding a little spice in my life.

How do you see yourself?
A very mixed person. Jekyll and Hyde would explain it.  I try to be true to myself and help people. Creativity is number one.

How would your best friend describe you?
He describes me as insane and he always questions why he's friends with me. He thinks I'm a pervert and he'll say that every guy that I date ends up having an obsession with cats and living in the woods.  He thinks that every weekend I go out and kill people. This is my best friend.

Is there anything you want people to know about you when they read my blog?
I am a dorky cosplayer.  If you want to ask anything, I don't mind.

Paul Darragh

First Impression:
Paul, otherwise known as "Tall Paul", he will catch catch your eye on campus.  He is truly very tall and has unique facial features that make him stand out. When I met Paul he was really easy to talk to and had a welcoming feel about him.  He is involved in so much on campus!  I had seen Paul on posters because he has a role as the freshman senator. When he walks down the quarter mile, you can't miss him.  I can definitely say he makes a great quarter mile celebrity.
.
What is your major? What year are you?
Software engineering, freshman.

Where are you from?
North Attleboro, Massachusetts.

What are you planning on doing after college?
I'm not sure who I'd like go to work for, but I definitely want to start off working for a software company, not go off and start my own company.

How do you think your style reflects you as a person?
I am very outgoing, friendly, I try and show that, because I think people find me very approachable. I really don't care what people think, I am who I am.

How do you see yourself?
I see myself as someone who enjoys being involved on campus, making campus better and not biting off more than I can chew.

How would your best friend describe you?
My best friend would describe me as liking awful jokes, haha, that I like dirty jokes, and that I have a dirty mind. But when it comes down to it, I know I can get down to business.  I have a very good work ethic. Work hard, play hard.

Is there anything you want people to know about you when they read my blog?
I am very approachable, I want to get to know everyone on campus, I know that is an unrealistic goal, but that's what I want to try for. Come up and say hi! I love to make new friends.

How to Stand Out On a Large Campus

How to Stand Out On a Large Campus- eHow.com

RIT is considered a "large campus" with a student body consisting of 17,652 students. When you go to a school with such a large student body, it's hard to stand out and not be considered just another face in the crowd.  I can walk down the quarter mile and see tons of people I know and then the next day not recognize any faces.  The tips on ehow.com can help you stand out.

I found myself reading these tips saying to myself; 'Yes, these tips actually work".  Tip number 1; many of the students involved in student government I have met and can point out from seeing them at events, on posters, and all over campus. Tip number 4; if you wear a silly hat or a unique object every day, I guarantee you will be standing out in no time. Tip number 5; this tip definitely works, i.e Kelley on her crutches.  Tip number 8 is a little odd, but hey, if you think it'll work for you, then go for it.

For example the freshman senator- Paul Darraugh.  I have seen his face on posters all through the tunnels and his unique features make him stand out on campus.  I recently introduced myself to him because I was tired of seeing his smiling face all over the place. I went up to him and said, "Hi, I'm Jenna Clark, I see you all over!" I think he was a little taken back but he was super friendly and nice to talk to.

Another girl that I actually heard about in the first week of college is the girl that wears a Santa hat all year long. Which relates back to tip number 4. I think that is so unique and I've never heard of anyone doing something like this. I definitely would love to interview her for my blog.

If you are trying to stand out on campus, follow these tips, and maybe I'll be blogging about you next!

Kelley Scanlon

First Impression:  My first impression of Kelley, was wow, this girl does not give a s@!t what anybody thinks of her; and that is awesome. I didn't think we would ever become really good friends because of her style, hobbies and my whole first impression, but I was wrong. When I first saw her at RIT her edgy style and a super loud personality definitely stood out from the crowd.  During fall quarter she broke her leg and that did not stop her from longboarding. Many people would see her riding down the quarter mile with her bright pink crutches. She has even made it on to Reddit as the "girl with pink crutches and a longboard."  That is why Kelly Scanlon is a quarter mile celebrity.

What is your major? What year are you?
I am a first year computer exploration major.

Where are you from?
New Hampshire! Live free or die bitches!

What are you planning on doing after college?
Hopefully I'll have my own business making longboards.  If not I want to marry a Prince from Spain and be a queen, or own a winery in California.

How  do you think your style reflects you as a person?
It shows off how spontaneous I am. My style changes all the time; sometimes I'll dress skater sometimes hippie sometimes I want to be girly girl. I'll wear whatever I want to wear.

How do you see yourself?
I see myself as one of those rare Rochester sunny days.

How would your best friend describe you?
I would probably say crazy, but in a good way. I probably think they think I climb too much stuff.  They know I have a really short attention span and that I am really really loud.
Is there anything you want people to know about you when they read my blog?
If anyone ever needs help with longboards come to me! I can make, fix, talk, do anything related to longboarding. I love talking to people so if anyone wants to talk, I'm open to it!

NICKY IP

First Impression: When I first saw Nicky on the quarter mile I did a double take.  With his six-inch heels, screaming "fashionista", I was jealous.  Every time I saw him on the quarter mile, I would stare in amazement.  At RIT, fashion isn't always appreciated; seeing Nicky was super refreshing and reminded me of the fashion world I love.

What is your major? What year are you?
I am a fourth year multi-disciplinary focusing on design and business.

Where are you from?
Hong Kong.  I came over when I was thirteen, a freshman in high school. Despite this, English is my primary language. My family is in Hong Kong and I go back to visit them.

What are you planning on doing after college?
I am trying to find a job or internship as an assistant or buyer in the fashion world. For example, working for Macy's: what product to buy and for how much. You have to know the trends. I am "HUGE on fashion."

How  do you think your style reflects you as a person?
Fashion is a huge part of my life and I've always known that since I was little.  I do design work and draw all the time. Dressing up, investing my time, expressing creativity. How some people  have a passion for drawing or art,  I have a passion for fashion.

How do you see yourself?
As a little rebellious, out of the box, doesn't fit in, but I don't really care.

How would your best friend describe you?
Sometimes they don't agree with my style or decisions but they love me anyways. Instead, they enjoy my creativity, and appreciate that. I don't care what people think and I stay true to myself.

Is there anything you want people to know about you when they read my blog?
I encourage people to come up and say hi. I am open to people's opinions, if you have something to say, feel free to. I would rather have you understand and get to know me than judge right away.
